Apologetics isn't a spectator sport reserved for trained professionals. Every sincere believer desires to defend the faith and share the truth in love. Motive isn't the issue. Effective articulation of our faith is.
Most of us know what we believe, and we know why we believe it. But confidence in what we know doesn't always translate into clear communication of what others need to hear. When Scripture tells us to “be ready always to give an answer to every man” (1 Peter 3:15), the apostle is telling every believer to be an apologist. The word for answer is apologia, and it simply means to give a defense, an explanation. And notice how the same verse ends: “with meekness and fear.”
The command to answer and the call to gentleness are spoken in a single breath.
But articulating our faith is only the beginning, and it was never meant to be an end in itself. We defend the faith so that we can share it. Every answer we give is meant to clear the way for the gospel and to make Christ known. Giving an answer to every man also assumes that we know the context of the questioner. Whether Muslim, Hindu, or atheist, the everyday believer should work to be equipped to answer his neighbour, his coworker, or his family member with a defense of the faith, offered not to win an argument but to reach a soul.
